You can legally fit solar panels yourself in the UK, but the moment you connect them to your consumer unit or the grid, the work becomes notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations and must be certified.
The three big catches
- Working at height on a roof is one of the most dangerous DIY tasks there is.
- Without an MCS-certified installer you can't claim Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments.
- Home insurance and manufacturer warranties may be voided.
Why MCS matters
MCS is the industry certification scheme for small-scale renewables. Only MCS-certified installs qualify for SEG, and most reputable panel and inverter manufacturers require MCS-standard installation for their full warranty.
