What solar panel installation involves — and why it matters.

What it is

A solar PV installation converts daylight into electricity via panels mounted to your roof, feeding an inverter that powers your home and exports surplus back to the grid under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). Systems are sized around your annual consumption, roof orientation, shading profile and future plans — heat pump, EV, battery.

Who it's for

Homeowners across Staffordshire, Shropshire, the West Midlands, Cheshire and Derbyshire who want lower bills, protection against price hikes and a system installed to a standard that will still be earning them money in 20 years — not the cheapest quote from a national sales-driven installer.

When you need it

Ideal before your next winter, before an EV purchase, before adding a heat pump, or whenever your day-rate electricity feels indefensible. Roofs 15+ years old should be reviewed before install; south, east and west aspects all work.

Why professional matters

MCS certification is legally required to claim SEG export payments and to unlock most solar finance products. A poorly designed system loses thousands over its lifetime through undersized inverters, wrong string layouts, unmanaged shading and paperwork that never gets filed with the DNO. Getting it right the first time is dramatically cheaper than fixing it.

What goes wrong when this isn't done properly.

Under-sized systems that never pay back

National installers routinely quote 8–10 panels because it fits their default kit. If your consumption supports 14 panels + battery, you've capped your return for 25 years.

SEG paperwork never filed

We regularly meet homeowners whose installer never registered the system with the DNO or SEG supplier — meaning every kWh they export is free electricity to the grid. Fixing this retrospectively is possible but slow.

Shading and string design ignored

One shaded panel on a badly designed string can drag the entire array down by 30–40%. Optimisers or micro-inverters solve it — but only if the surveyor spotted it.

Cheap inverters that fail at year 6

The inverter is the brain. A budget unit outside its warranty costs £1,200–£2,000 to replace. Reputable brands with 10-year warranties cost slightly more up front and save you the bill.

Our process.

  1. 1

    Free site survey

Roof measurement, aspect and pitch review, shading assessment, consumer unit inspection and consumption analysis using your last 12 months of bills.

  2. 2

    Bespoke system design

String layout, inverter and (optional) battery sizing, roof mounting plan and estimated annual generation modelled for your postcode.

  3. 3

Written fixed quote in 2 working days

One page, plain English, no sales pressure. Scaffolding, DNO application, MCS certificate and HIES cover all included.

  4. 4

    DNO / G99 application

We handle the grid application — you don't. Most approvals land within 10–15 working days.

  5. 5

    Installation (1–2 days on site)

Scaffolding up, panels mounted, cable runs routed neatly, inverter and (if fitted) battery commissioned, monitoring app paired.

  6. 6

Handover, MCS certificate and SEG registration

We walk you through the app, hand over documentation, and register you for SEG export payments with your chosen supplier.

The benefits, in concrete terms.

Bills cut 50–90%

With correctly sized solar + battery, most Staffordshire homes we install for now generate the majority of their annual usage on-site.

SEG income you can bank on

MCS certification unlocks export payments. Rates vary by supplier — we advise on the best current tariff at handover.

25–30 year panel warranty

Tier-1 panels from Aiko and DMEGC carry 25+ year product and performance warranties. The array will outlast most inverters.

HIES insurance-backed guarantee

Deposit protection and workmanship cover even if the worst happens to us as a business. Standard on every install.

Future-proof for EV + heat pump

We size inverters and consumer units so adding an EV charger or heat pump later is a wiring job, not a redesign.

Owner-led install quality

Mark is on the roof and in the loft on every job. No sub-contracted crews you'll never meet again.

The detail behind the work.

Panels: what we install and why

We favour Aiko and DMEGC tier-1 mono-crystalline panels for their combination of efficiency (typically 430–450W per panel on current models), shading tolerance, and 25–30 year performance warranties. All-black variants are available where kerb appeal matters. Panel choice is driven by roof area — a compact 12m² area calls for high-efficiency panels; a large barn roof can use standard-efficiency panels at lower cost per Wp.

Inverters and string design

Inverter selection depends on system size, whether a battery is fitted at install or planned for later, and whether you want a single- or three-phase supply. Sigenergy and Fox ESS hybrids are our default where batteries are involved; string inverters are used for larger arrays without storage. String layout is designed to keep panels of matching orientation and shading on the same string — if shading is unavoidable, we specify optimisers.

Roof mounting and weatherproofing

All-aluminium rail systems fixed into rafters (not battens) using stainless steel roof hooks under interlocking tiles or slate. Flashing kits used for through-tile penetrations where required. Roof integrity is our responsibility — every fixing point is checked, and we do not proceed on roofs we consider structurally unsuitable.

Battery pairing

Adding a battery at the point of install is materially cheaper than retrofitting later — cables and consumer unit tap-offs get done once. We fit Sigenergy, Tesla, Fox ESS and Hanchu batteries depending on capacity, backup requirement and budget. Sizing is driven by your evening/overnight consumption, not by a default kit list.

DNO, G99 and SEG paperwork

Every grid-connected solar system needs either a G98 (notification) or G99 (approval) submission to your DNO. We complete these on your behalf. On handover we register your export MPAN with the SEG supplier of your choice so payments start flowing from month one.

Common Staffordshire roof types

Concrete interlocking tiles (most common on 1960s–2000s stock), plain clay tiles on older properties, natural slate, and increasingly composite roof tiles on new-builds. Each has a specific hook and flashing spec. Metal profile roofs on outbuildings and barns are handled with clamp-mount systems — a common option for larger domestic and commercial installs.

Frequently asked questions.

How much does solar cost in Staffordshire?+

System pricing is bespoke because it depends on panel count, inverter, battery pairing, scaffolding and roof type. Most domestic solar + battery installs we quote fall between £8,000 and £18,000 all-in. We give you a fixed written quote in around 2 working days — no obligation.

How long does the installation take on site?+

Most domestic installs are 1–2 days on site once the DNO application is approved. Scaffolding goes up first and is dropped once the array is complete and commissioned.

Do I need planning permission?+

For most homes, no — solar PV falls under permitted development. Listed buildings and Conservation Areas need permission and we help identify this at survey stage.

What warranty do I get?+

25–30 year panel product and performance warranty, 10–12 years on inverters and batteries, plus our own 2-year workmanship guarantee and HIES insurance-backed guarantee covering deposits and workmanship.

How much can I actually save per year?+

For a typical 4kW system with a battery in Staffordshire, we see combined bill-savings and SEG-export values of £900–£1,600 per year, depending on tariff, consumption pattern and EV ownership.

Can you install solar on a north-facing roof?+

East–west split arrays perform excellently. Pure north-facing arrays are only worth installing on very large roofs and are usually not our recommendation.

How long does the DNO application take?+

G98 notifications are near-immediate. G99 approvals (needed for larger systems or where an EV charger + battery pushes capacity) typically land in 10–15 working days.

Can you install a system and add a battery later?+

Yes — we design the system so the battery can be added later. We just prefer to fit at the same time because cabling and paperwork happen once.

Do you handle emergency solar repair too?+

Yes — inverter faults and lost output are a big part of our repair diary. If your system is dark, ring us on the number below.
