What solar repairs & servicing involves — and why it matters.

What it is

Solar system diagnostics, fault-finding, inverter and optimiser replacement, panel testing, string reconfiguration, SEG paperwork rectification, and general system health checks. We work on any installer's system, not just our own.

Who it's for

Homeowners whose systems have been switched off for weeks or months, whose output has quietly dropped, whose installer has gone out of business, or who are simply due a service. Also landlords whose tenants can't get the previous installer to respond.

When you need it

Immediately if the inverter is throwing errors, if generation has dropped noticeably against last year, if the app has stopped reporting, if you've moved into a house with an existing solar system, or if annual servicing has never been done.

Why professional matters

A dark inverter is money going out the door every day. Even small performance losses — a failed optimiser here, a corroded MC4 connector there — compound over a year into hundreds of pounds of lost generation and export. Faster diagnosis means faster restoration.

What goes wrong when this isn't done properly.

Original installer has vanished

Solar sales boom created a lot of installers, and the wash-out has taken plenty with it. Warranties are only worth as much as the company issuing them. We step in on abandoned systems regularly.

System offline for weeks

A tripped isolator, failed DC breaker or firmware-locked inverter can knock production to zero. Every day it stays off, you're buying peak-rate electricity you shouldn't have to.

SEG paperwork never filed

If your installer never registered your MPAN with the SEG supplier, you have been giving your surplus to the grid for free. We rectify this retrospectively where possible.

Non-compliant or unsafe installs

Missing DC isolators, incorrectly routed cables, poorly bonded arrays, unsafe roof mounts — we've seen all of it. Rectification protects both your home and your insurance.

Common failure points we see

Failed optimisers (usually 1–2 out of many, dragging one string down), MC4 connector corrosion (particularly on coastal or exposed sites), inverter DC isolator faults, firmware locks after botched updates, tripped RCDs on the AC side, failed communication modules that leave the app dark while the system still generates.

Panel-level fault-finding

Where output has dropped disproportionately, we test individual strings under load, check IV curves where the inverter reports them, and inspect panels for delamination, backsheet failure or micro-cracking. Panel replacement is a last resort — most 'panel' issues are actually connector, optimiser or shading problems.

Inverter servicing and replacement

String and hybrid inverters have a 10–12 year typical service life. Beyond that, replacement is often more economic than repair. We fit like-for-like where the string layout dictates, or upgrade to a hybrid if the customer is adding a battery.

Battery diagnostics and integration issues

Batteries that don't charge fully, don't discharge fully, or ignore tariff schedules are usually configuration issues rather than hardware failures. We can log into all major systems (Sigenergy, Fox, Tesla, Hanchu) to reconfigure charge windows, priority logic and SoC limits.

Rectifying non-compliant installs

Missing DC isolators, exposed cabling, incorrect earthing and unsafe roof mounts are all rectifiable. We provide a written scope of remedial work with a fixed quote before proceeding, and issue an MCS-compliant certificate on completion where the install can be brought to spec.

Servicing schedule recommendations

We recommend a system health check every 3–5 years for domestic solar, more frequently for commercial installs. Servicing catches optimiser failures, monitoring dropouts and connector issues before they compound.

Can you fix a system installed by someone else?+

Yes — a large chunk of our repair work is exactly that. We'll assess it honestly and quote the fix, whether the original installer is still trading or not.

My installer has gone out of business — am I stuck?+

No. Component warranties from panel and inverter manufacturers survive the installer's business. We can help you claim under manufacturer warranty and cover the labour side.

How much does a solar repair typically cost?+

Diagnostic visits start from around £150 and are credited against any repair work we do. Component replacements vary — a failed optimiser is under £200 fitted; a full inverter replacement is £1,200–£2,000 depending on model.

Do you cover warranty claims?+

We diagnose the fault, document it, and coordinate the manufacturer RMA process where the fault sits with the equipment. Labour to fit the replacement is chargeable separately.

How do I know my system is under-performing?+

Compare this year's kWh generation to last year's for the same month — significant drops (>15%) at similar weather conditions are a red flag. If you've lost app visibility, that's another warning sign.

Can you register my SEG payments retrospectively?+

Where the original MCS paperwork exists, yes. We can lodge missing supplier registrations. Where the paperwork was never issued we'll advise on the best remaining route.

How long does a typical repair visit take?+

Most diagnostic visits are 1–2 hours. Component replacement adds another 2–4 hours on the same visit where the parts are in stock.
