What ev charger installation involves — and why it matters.
A dedicated 7.4kW home EV charging point wired directly from your consumer unit, protected to the current wiring regulations, and paired with your car and your energy tariff for cheap overnight charging. Installations include groundworks where the charger needs to reach a detached garage or a distant parking bay.
New and current EV owners across Staffordshire and the wider Midlands who want to stop relying on public chargers, cut fuel costs by 80%+ overnight, and have a charger that looks the part on the front of their home rather than lashed together with surface trunking.
Ideally before your EV arrives, so it's live from day one. Also common: switching from a builder-fitted or first-generation charger that isn't compatible with modern smart tariffs.
Public rapid charging at 60–80p/kWh is the most expensive way to run an EV in the UK. Overnight charging on Octopus Go or equivalent at 7–10p/kWh is 8–10× cheaper per mile. A properly installed home charger pays for itself inside a year of ownership for most drivers.
What goes wrong when this isn't done properly.
Cables lashed round the house
Rushed installs leave surface trunking clipped across brickwork with visible screws. It looks terrible and it corrodes. Neat routing is the difference between a five-year and a fifteen-year install.
Consumer unit not up to it
Older boards without spare capacity or RCD protection can't safely take a 32A charger circuit. This gets missed at survey and results in either an unsafe install or a mid-job upgrade at surprise cost.
No load management, blown main fuse
Charging at 7.4kW while running an electric shower and an oven can trip the main fuse. Load-managed chargers detect this and throttle down automatically — non-load-managed ones don't.
Wrong charger for the tariff
Not every charger integrates cleanly with Octopus Intelligent Go. Buying the wrong unit locks you out of the cheapest tariff on the market.
Our process.
- 1
Site survey and product recommendation
We check parking location, cable route, consumer unit capacity, main fuse rating and existing loads.
- 2
Written fixed quote
Charger, install, cable run, groundworks (if needed) and DNO notification — all in one price. No surprises.
- 3
DNO notification
We notify your DNO of the new EV load before install — a legal requirement.
- 4
Installation (typically 1 day)
Charger mounted, cable routed neatly (buried where the run is external, chased where indoors), consumer unit tap-off, RCD-A / Type-B protection where required.
- 5
Commissioning and app pairing
Full functional test, load management configured, tariff schedule set up, app paired with your account.
- 6
Handover
Walk-through of the app, the charging cable, and the emergency isolation. Certification issued.
The benefits, in concrete terms.
80%+ cheaper per mile
Overnight tariff charging vs public rapid is the single biggest running-cost saving in EV ownership.
Neat, professional finish
No lashed-up cabling. Trunking chased where possible, cabling buried outside.
OZEV-approved installer
Grant eligibility maintained where you qualify (flats, rented properties).
Load-managed
Chargers configured to throttle down when the rest of the house is drawing hard. No main fuse blow-outs.
Solar-linked charging on supported units
myenergi Zappi and similar can charge preferentially from solar surplus — free driving from your own roof.
Groundworks handled if needed
Detached garage 15m away with the driveway in the middle? Not a problem. We dig, run duct, back-fill and reinstate.

The detail behind the work.
Chargers we install and why
Tesla Wall Connector (the cleanest install for Tesla drivers, integrates with the car app), myenergi Zappi (solar-linked charging, best-in-class for solar households), Hypervolt (British-designed, excellent aesthetics, load-managed), and other major brands on request. We'll advise on the best fit for your car, tariff and use case — not just what's in stock.
Cable routing and groundworks
Indoor routes are chased where the walls allow, otherwise cleanly clipped in matched trunking. Outdoor routes are buried in SWA duct at 450mm minimum depth under driveways, or clipped on brickwork where a buried run isn't practical. We reinstate paving, gravel and turf as part of the job.
Consumer unit and protection
Every EV circuit needs Type-A RCD as a minimum, with Type-B where the charger doesn't have integrated DC fault detection. We upgrade the consumer unit where needed and include this in the quote — no mid-job surprises.
Load management and main fuse
UK domestic supplies are typically fused at 60A, 80A or 100A. A 32A EV charger plus an electric shower and oven can push a 60A fuse over its limit. Load-managed chargers throttle to prevent this. Where the main fuse is 60A we always recommend load management or a fuse upgrade with your DNO.
Solar and battery integration
myenergi Zappi and similar chargers detect solar surplus and modulate charging to consume it directly, effectively giving free EV miles. Battery-paired systems can also charge the car preferentially from battery during peak-rate windows if configured.
Tesla-specific installation notes
Tesla Wall Connector supports up to 22kW three-phase; most UK homes are single-phase and cap at 7.4kW. Cable management, app pairing, and connection to the Tesla home fleet are all set up during commissioning.
Frequently asked questions.
How much is an EV charger fitted in Staffordshire?+
EV charger installations start from £960 fully installed for a standard 7.4kW charger on a straightforward install. Groundworks, consumer unit upgrades, or longer cable runs are additional and quoted separately.
Which chargers do you install?+
We're accredited for Tesla Wall Connector, myenergi Zappi and Hypervolt. If you have another brand in mind, ask and we'll advise. Solar-heavy households almost always want a Zappi.
Can you install to a detached garage?+
Yes — we've done plenty. Groundworks are part of the quote if the cable needs to run under a driveway or across a garden.
How long does the install take?+
Most installs are a full day on site. Longer if groundworks or a consumer unit change are involved — we'll tell you at quote stage.
Do I qualify for the OZEV grant?+
The OZEV grant now only applies to flats and rented properties (not owner-occupied houses). If you qualify, we can process the claim for you.
Can the charger use my solar?+
Yes — myenergi Zappi and similar chargers detect solar surplus and modulate their draw to consume it. Effectively free EV miles.
Will my main fuse cope with a 7.4kW charger?+
Most modern 80A/100A supplies do without any issue. 60A supplies benefit from load management or a fuse upgrade — we identify this at survey.
Do I need to tell my energy supplier?+
You don't — we notify the DNO on your behalf as part of the install. You may want to switch to an EV tariff (Octopus Go / Intelligent Go) to cut your charging costs, which we can advise on.
How long does the charger last?+
Major-brand chargers are rated for 10+ years of daily use. Warranty periods are typically 3 years, extended to 5 for some brands.
