How Long Do Home EV Chargers Last?

Home EV chargers typically last 10 years or more with minimal maintenance. Here's what affects lifespan and what to look for when yours is getting on.

Home EV chargers are solid-state appliances with very few moving parts, so they tend to be reliable. Most quality units are designed for a 10-year+ service life and come with manufacturer warranties of 3–5 years.

What affects lifespan

  • Exposure — chargers rated IP54 or higher weather the UK well.
  • Firmware support — cheap units sometimes lose smart features when the manufacturer drops support.
  • Cable wear — the tethered cable is the most likely thing to need replacing.

Signs it's time to replace

Cable damage, repeated tripping, connectivity failures, or the manufacturer stops providing firmware updates. In most cases the fixed installation is sound and we can swap the unit itself without redoing the cable run.
